Male Fertility: What an Evaluation May Include

Male factors are common and should be evaluated without blame. A structured assessment can clarify whether further testing or treatment is needed.

Medical and reproductive history

The clinician may ask about previous pregnancies, surgery, infections, medications, heat or toxin exposure, sexual health and lifestyle factors.

Semen analysis

A laboratory analysis assesses semen volume and sperm concentration, movement and form. Because results can vary, repeat testing may sometimes be recommended.

Further investigations

Hormone tests, ultrasound, genetic assessment or specialist examination may be considered when the history or semen findings indicate a reason.

Treatment planning

Depending on the cause, options may include treating an underlying condition, surgery, lifestyle guidance, IUI, IVF, ICSI or surgical sperm retrieval.
