ICSI is performed as part of an IVF cycle. After egg retrieval, an embryologist injects a selected sperm into a mature egg. It may be recommended when conventional fertilisation is less likely to be successful.
Important: A specialist should determine whether this pathway is appropriate after reviewing your history and investigations.
It may be discussed when
Sperm count, movement or form is significantly affected
Sperm has been surgically retrieved
Previous IVF cycles had poor or failed fertilisation
The clinical and embryology team identifies a specific indication
TYPICAL PATHWAY
What the process may involve.
01 · Evaluation
The couple’s fertility factors and semen findings are reviewed.
02 · IVF stimulation
Egg development and retrieval proceed as part of the IVF cycle.
03 · ICSI in the laboratory
A selected sperm is introduced into each suitable mature egg.
04 · Embryo observation
Fertilisation and embryo development are monitored before transfer or freezing.
What patients should know
ICSI can support fertilisation in selected situations, but it does not remove every factor that influences embryo development, implantation or pregnancy.
